Let’s S.L.U.M.B.E.R.!
1. (S) Story or Secret to Success
Introduce yourself in a few sentences - what’s your story? what’s your secret to success?
Hey there! I’m Kayli Mylius, founder of The Intentional Muse, a newsletter and community that aims to help women be their own muse and find the beauty in their everyday lives (also, there are a lot of book recs!)
Let’s back up:
Throughout the years, I’ve held many dreams. I built a six-figure marketing business, traveled where I desired regularly, and started to host events to bring together women — events that made them feel seen + connected — which is all I really wanted, and then it was no longer enough.
Going after dreams, or goals I thought were my dreams left me exhausted. In 2019, I was diagnosed with adrenal fatigue and PCOS, and those diagnoses made me wake up + realize I couldn’t go on achieving the way I had been. The late nights, the accepting client calls at all hours, the incessant pushing, climbing, and standing predominantly in my masculine energy; It had to stop.
I spent the next few years learning how to romance success by standing in my true alignment, and it worked.
In 2022, I was at a turning point in my life and it really got me thinking about what was next.
I thought about what experience I had and what lit me up inside. I had been a full-time entrepreneur, had a life coaching certification, and loved building community. It came to me, “What if I started something new to share what I’ve been learning with other women looking to cultivate their version of a beautiful life?” And The Intentional Muse was born!
Today, I strive to help all women feel a sense of fulfillment, creativity, and beauty in their lives.
As for success?
Defining your meaning of success is so important. Does that look like free time? Financial abundance? Community fulfillment? A mix of many things? I also am a firm believer that connection is a key to success — no matter how that may look to you. Happy hour with other SubStackers? I’m in! A friends monthly dinner? Name the time and place.
People want to uplift others and meaningful connections help with that!
2. (L) It’s not a sleepover without love! how’s your love life, a lesson you’ve learned in love, or tell us a story about a first crush!
Okay, story time! I was certifiably boy-crazy all through elementary and junior high. Truly.
In second grade, we were given rewards when we accumulated a certain amount of points and one day, my bestie + I finally had enough points to choose who we wanted to sit next to.
Well, instead of choosing each other, we BOTH chose THE SAME boy in our class and he was assigned a desk right smack dab in between the two of us!
Poor kid. Sorry, Matt K!
3. (U) Unexpected Blessing
Sometimes a door shuts in your face, and it turns into an unexpected blessing. Has this ever happened to you? Tell me more!
Oh, has it. I could choose from a pool of a million stories… though my most poignant one sticks out.
I had been dating someone for seven years, we lived together, had just got a dog, and I thought things were moving toward marriage. Little did I know, he had been cheating on me. I found out as we backpacked Europe for a month.
I was devastated. Crying in hostel bunkbeds, calling my poor mother in the middle of the night hyperventilating, the works. It felt like everything I knew was crashing down around me.
Back in the USA, I discovered that this was indeed a new beginning. I moved in with a mutual friend, went to a party where I met a group of supportive people who would be in my life for many years, worked to get some extra clients, got a new car, and became more involved in my sorority.
Now, I thank GOD things didn’t work out with that person. I’m married to someone who prioritizes me and our marriage beyond all else, live in a city my then-boyfriend never wanted to move to, and spoiler: I kept the dog!
4. (M) Manifestation
What are you manifesting, hoping, or dreaming of right now? The sky is the limit!
I am big-time manifesting a book deal. Like many writers, that has been my dream for as long as I can remember and I’m determined to make it happen! Right now, I’m diving into an outline for a book that would detail how we can all become our own muse, with interviews from inspiring women of different cultures from around the globe.
The muse is defined as “a person or personified force who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist,” and historically, it has been women being the muse for a man.
What would happen if women started seeing themselves as the muse? Being their own source of inspiration for a creative, life well lived? The world would be more joyful, more grounded, more moved to move — empowered people, empower people. I really do believe that.
One way you can be a muse in your own life? Embrace your sensuality!
When someone hears the word “sensual,” images of erotic closed-door memories often flash to mind, but I’ve discovered that incorporating sensuality into your everyday — the way you get ready in the morning, how you undress at night, certainly the way you eat — can change life as you know it.
I went into how you can embrace your sensuality, in this issue of The Intentional Muse, but some quick hot tips?
Thank your food prior to eating.
Gaze lovingly at yourself.
Stand under hot water in the shower, sensing the drops hit your body, and imagine any energy you no longer want to claim wash down the drain to be blessed, transmuted, and transformed for the greater good.
If you’re interested in bring these lessons (and more) come to life, let’s connect!
5. (B) Biggest Lesson
You know those big lessons that change the fabric of who you are? What’s yours?
I recently was reading Pema Chödrön’s book When Things Fall Apart and her words have been stuck in my head for days. She said,
“Thinking that we can find some lasting pleasure and avoid pain is what in Buddhism is called samsara, a hopeless cycle that goes round and round endlessly and causes us to suffer greatly.”
She goes on to say what I’ve been trying to find hope in during recent tough times so succinctly, “[The off-center, in-between state is] a situation in which we don’t get caught and we can open our hearts and minds beyond limit.”
I’m a work in progress (allllllways) and have been attempting to imagine what incredible journey is on its way when things fall apart, or simply don’t work out the way I’d hope.
6. (E) Everyday Mantra
So many challenges come up in a day, week, or month. Tell me about your self-talk, how do you talk yourself through life’s tough or even joyful moments?
After a particularly tearful, messy night in college, someone told me,
“My heart is at ease knowing that what was meant for me will never miss me, and that what misses me was never meant for me.”
I still return to those words as a mantra that I hold near and dear to my heart. The original person who said it was an 18th-century Muslim jurist, Imam Al-Shafii
7. (R) Recent or Upcoming Projects
Where can people find more your work? what else can they expect from you?
You can find more of my work over at The Intentional Muse, where you can expect audio meditations, interviews with incredible people, a reader community (join us on Geneva!) to connect with like-minded humans, and more.
Hope to see you soon! x
Recap & Closing
My 3 Big Take Aways From Kayli’s Interview:
Be your own muse! - It’s not enough to let our creations, dreams, and desires sit idle inside our mind. We have to take the next step and bring them to life in the real world! It’s not enough to admire someone else, we’ve got to admire ourselves too. Loving yourself & your life isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessary step to achieving happiness and wholeness.
Slow down & be intentional - Kayli saw tons of financial success in her first business, but her body and mind suffered from the long & hard hours. So, she created a NEW business + lifestyle that is more aligned with her needs. She now enjoys success AND balance. Going SLOW equals MORE sustainable success.
Embrace sensuality - Use your 5 senses to be present in your body and enjoy all the beautiful moments life has to offer. I love the tip about slow mindful meals + showers. I tend to rush through, but it’s so important to slow down, enjoy, and stand in your own beauty!
